By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Basking in the euphoria of winning the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title, the head coach of Bayelsa Queens, Ogbonda Whyte says not winning the title in previous attempts has denied him national team appointments.
After guiding Ibom Angels to second place twice, the gaffer finally won the league title for the first time in Ikenne, Ogun state, on Saturday.
The team defeated Naija Ratels FC 4-1 while Nasarawa Amazons and Edo Queens’ 0-0 draw sealed the Yenegoa based side’s sixth league title.
“I am happy because this title has denied me of more plum jobs. I remembered when I went for the U-17 job, I was asked if I have won any title as a head coach which I haven’t then,” He said.
Earlier, Ogbonda ended his title drought by guiding Rivers Angels to the 2024 President Federation Cup title in Lagos.
He attributed his recent success to huge financially support and motivation from his teams.

“Last year, I took Rivers to win the President Federation Cup and now I have won the league title for Bayelsa Queens. I will say I am very happy.” He continued.
“I have it in mind to get to this stage because the state government did everything humanly possible to motivate the players and technical crew for us to get to this stage.
“I am sure that we are going to get to this stage because a lot of financial motivation is at stake for every match we win.” He concluded.
The Prosperity Girls will represent Nigeria on the continent for the second time becoming the first NWFL Premiership side to achieve the feat.
Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, and Edo Queens were the other Nigerian representative while Bayelsa Queens which clinched the league title in 2022 won the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) title.
They remained the country’s best participants at the CAF Women’s Champions League with a bronze medal in 2022.
