Man City face Rodri crossroads as Maresca era begins after Guardiola exit
Manchester City are entering one of the most delicate periods of their modern history as they transition from the decade-long rule of Pep Guardiola to a new project under Enzo Maresca – with the future of midfield lynchpin Rodri emerging as the defining issue.
Guardiola’s departure has already triggered a partial rebuild of the treble-winning squad, with several key figures from that historic 2022-23 campaign moving on. At the same time, uncertainty is growing around Rodri, who is nearing the end of his current contract and recovering from injury, while serious interest from Real Madrid raises the prospect of a major sale.

Should Rodri depart, however, Maresca’s task becomes far more complex. City would need to identify and integrate a successor capable of handling the strategic and positional demands of that role, all while the club is already dealing with the departure of other treble-era figures and the broader adjustment to life after Guardiola.
New project, familiar expectations
Despite the upheaval, standards at Manchester City remain unchanged. The former Premier League champions continue to measure success by their ability to compete for the title and challenge deep into the latter stages of the Champions League.
How they navigate Rodri’s situation will go a long way towards determining whether this new chapter under Maresca can maintain that level. Hold on to him and City secure short-term stability in a crucial position, albeit with the risk attached to his injury and contract timeline. Decide to sell and they gain the financial muscle to accelerate the rebuild, but at the cost of losing a player who has been fundamental to their recent dominance.
In either case, the configuration of Maresca’s midfield – and the identity of the player tasked with anchoring it – is set to become one of the defining themes of Manchester City’s post-Guardiola era.
