Nico Williams explains why he rejected Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain offers

Nico Williams says he chose to remain with Athletic Bilbao despite offers from Barcelona, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and several other clubs, insisting his decision was made with complete conviction.
The Spain winger addressed speculation over his future after Athletic Bilbao’s 4-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday, following comments from his agent Felix Tainta about negotiations with Barcelona during the summer of 2024.
Tainta said Athletic Bilbao knew about the contact, although the Basque club was unhappy with the way Barcelona handled the proposed transfer. He explained that the discussions broke down because of Barcelona’s problems with financial fair play rules.
According to Tainta, the lack of guarantees over whether Nico could be registered and play for Barcelona meant he was unwilling to risk his future by completing the move.
Nico rejected that account, saying: “Felix got his words wrong; things are not like that.”
He added that the final decision over his future belonged to him, his brother and his family, saying the details of what happens within the family are known only to them.
The 22-year-old also made clear that staying at Athletic Bilbao had always been a genuine possibility, regardless of the approaches he received.
“I said no to Barcelona, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and many other clubs because I am here,” he said.
Nico subsequently renewed his contract with Athletic Bilbao until 30 June 2035, underlining his commitment to continuing his career at the club.
His latest comments appeared to provide a direct response to the explanation offered by his agent, while also putting the focus on his own choice to remain in Bilbao. Rather than presenting his decision as the result of uncertainty over a move, Nico said it reflected his preference to stay with Athletic Bilbao.
The winger also discussed criticism directed at him on social media. He said online reaction should not be confused with everyday life and that he preferred to concentrate on the people close to him.
“Social networks are not real life,” Nico said.
He also spoke about the responsibility he feels towards children who look up to him. Nico said he wants to be a positive example for those who see him as a role model, adding that this is another reason he focuses on his family and immediate circle rather than the criticism posted online.
His new long-term contract and latest statements now leave his position clear: Nico says he turned down major offers because he wanted to continue with Athletic Bilbao.
