Egypt’s position is the opposite. They have already been eliminated after losing their opening two matches against Zambia and Malawi. Across those defeats, Egypt conceded nine goals, but they will still aim to finish their tournament with a positive performance against Nigeria.

Nigeria are the record champions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and will start as the favourites, although Egypt’s elimination does not remove the importance of the match for Madugu’s side. The Super Falcons need the three points to make certain of their position in the quarter-finals rather than depend on another result.

The two countries have only met once previously at this tournament. That meeting came in 1998, when Nigeria recorded a 6-0 victory over Egypt.

With Malawi already confirmed as group winners, attention now turns to whether Nigeria can join them in the knockout stage. Madugu’s side will be seeking a disciplined performance after the suspensions and red card that affected their previous match, while Egypt will look to salvage pride from their final Group C appearance.
