Uchenna Kanu’s Late Header Not Enough as Racing Louisville Fall to Kansas City Current

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria international Uchenna Kanu scored her first goal of the 2025 NWSL season, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Racing Louisville from suffering a 4-2 defeat to Kansas City Current at the CPKC Stadium.

The hosts took an early lead in the 2nd minute after an unfortunate own goal by Lauren Milliet. Kansas City continued their dominant first-half performance with goals from Michelle Cooper and Bia Zaneratto, giving them a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

Racing Louisville attempted a comeback in the second half, with Janine Beckie pulling one back in the 62nd minute.

Kanu, who was subbed on for Courtney Petersen in the 87th minute, made an immediate impact by heading home from Beckie’s corner just one minute later to make it 3-2.

However, any hopes of a dramatic late equalizer were dashed when Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga scored in stoppage time to secure the 4-2 win for Kansas City.

The goal marks Kanu’s first of the season and comes in her third year with Racing Louisville since joining from Mexican side UANL Tigres.

She enjoyed a standout campaign last year with five goals in 12 appearances, but has netted just once in five games so far this season.

Racing Louisville currently sit sixth on the NWSL table with 17 points from 12 matches. They will look to bounce back when they face Orlando Pride on June 21.
