Osimhen extends perfect Basaksehir record before injury ends Galatasaray outing

Victor Osimhen maintained his unbeaten record against Istanbul Basaksehir by scoring in Galatasaray’s 3-2 Turkish Super Lig win, but the Nigeria international was forced off after just 33 minutes with a suspected muscle injury.

The striker opened the scoring after 16 minutes at Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium, converting a move created by Lucas Torreira with a powerful finish. It was Osimhen’s sixth goal in four league appearances this season, adding to the five goals and two assists he had recorded in his first three matches.

The fixture had been brought forward to Friday, 4 September, with kick-off at 20:00 local time because of Galatasaray’s Champions League commitments. The defending Turkish champions began the game as league leaders, having collected seven points from their opening three league fixtures.

Osimhen’s latest goal also continued his outstanding record against Istanbul Basaksehir. He has now played five matches against them and won all five, scoring three goals and supplying one assist. No other opponent he has faced in Turkey has seen him maintain a 100% winning record across five meetings.

He also scored against Basaksehir in Galatasaray’s final league game of the 2024/25 season and in their 3-0 victory over the same club in March 2026. In that March match, Osimhen scored in the 66th minute after Yunus Akgun played the ball into his path.

That goal was his ninth in nine successive Super Lig appearances at the time, while his run of scoring or assisting in league matches had also extended to nine games.

How Osimhen compares against other Turkish clubs

Although Istanbul Basaksehir have been unable to avoid defeat when Osimhen has played, Antalyaspor have conceded more goals to him. The forward has scored seven times in four appearances against them, averaging 1.75 goals per game, and has won all four matches.

He has scored five goals in four games against both Samsunspor and Kayserispor, winning every match against each club. His record against Caykur Rizespor is similarly perfect, with four goals in four appearances and four victories.

Osimhen has four goals and one assist in three matches against Eyupspor, although he has lost once. Against Kasimpasa, he has scored four goals in only two appearances. That gives him his second-best goals-per-game ratio among the listed opponents, but both matches ended in defeat.

His record against Istanbul rivals Besiktas and Fenerbahce is less commanding. Osimhen has scored twice in four games against Besiktas, recording two wins, one draw and one defeat. Against Fenerbahce, he has one goal and one assist from four appearances, with two wins and two losses.

The distinction with Istanbul Basaksehir is therefore not simply the number of goals he has scored, but the fact that he has never lost or drawn against them.

Injury concern for Nigeria

Osimhen’s evening was cut short in the 33rd minute after he went down and was unable to continue. Barıs Alper Yılmaz replaced him, while Turkish broadcaster beIN Sports reported that the problem occurred in the 31st minute.

There was no immediate confirmed diagnosis after the match, leaving the seriousness of the injury unclear.

Galatasaray recovered without their main striker. Eldor Shomurodov levelled from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, before Torreira restored the visitors’ advantage five minutes later. Davinson Sanchez then scored an own goal in the 76th minute to make it 2-2.

Gabriel Sara settled the match in the 90th minute, securing a 3-2 victory for Galatasaray and leaving them with four points from their first four league matches. The club’s official match report confirmed the five goals and Osimhen’s early opener.

The injury will be monitored closely in Nigeria, with the Super Eagles due to start their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this month.

Nigeria’s Group L opener is scheduled against Madagascar on 25 September, followed by an away match against Guinea-Bissau on 29 September. Tanzania, one of the tournament’s co-hosts, is also in the group alongside Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
