Victor Osimhen injury raises doubts over Nigeria’s September AFCON qualifiers

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen faces a race against time to be fit for the Super Eagles’ opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September after suffering a suspected groin injury while playing for Galatasaray.

Osimhen scored Galatasaray’s opening goal in the 16th minute, continuing his outstanding start to the season. It was his sixth goal in four games for the Turkish club.

However, his evening was cut short when he was forced off in the 33rd minute. The injury appeared to affect his groin, and there are now serious concerns that it could prevent him from joining up with Nigeria for their first AFCON qualifying matches.

The Super Eagles are due to begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with a home match against Madagascar in Uyo on 23 September. They will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Osimhen’s involvement in both fixtures is now in doubt. Galatasaray are expected to issue an update on the nature of the injury and the possible length of his absence, which should provide a clearer indication of whether he will be available for Nigeria.

The 26-year-old had been in prolific form before the injury interrupted his latest appearance. His goal against his opponents was his sixth of the season in only four matches, underlining the importance of his contribution to Galatasaray and to the Super Eagles.

Nigeria will hope the problem is not serious enough to rule out their leading striker, but his early departure has created immediate uncertainty ahead of the September international window. No confirmed recovery period has yet been provided.
