FIFA president Gianni Infantino keeps future plans under wraps
Gianni Infantino has refused to clarify whether he intends to remain as FIFA president, leaving continued uncertainty over his future leadership of world football’s governing body.
Infantino was speaking in Katowice, Poland, where he attended the opening of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Questions from journalists focused on whether he was considering resigning or preparing to stand for another term, but the FIFA president declined to give a direct answer on either possibility.
After discussing the tournament and FIFA’s wider responsibilities, Infantino made clear that he did not want the event to become a platform for announcing his personal plans. His comments, reported by Foot Mercato, suggested that he was not prepared to offer even an indication of which direction he might take.
“Regarding the rest, there will be a lot to say, but there will be the right time and the right place to talk about it. Not today, and not here,” Infantino told the media.
He did not add any further information that might shed light on whether he is considering stepping down or seeking another mandate. As a result, speculation over his position remains unresolved.
Instead, Infantino redirected the discussion towards FIFA’s stated ambition of expanding opportunities for footballers, players and emerging talent across the world. He used the growth of international competitions to underline what he described as the organisation’s commitment to making the game more accessible.
“It is about giving opportunities to factions, players and talents from all over the world,” he said, pointing to the increasing number of participants in international tournaments.
Infantino continued by presenting FIFA’s work as part of a broader effort to develop football globally and ensure that people in every region can take part in the sport.
“Here and now, we value football. And we continue to work within FIFA, of course, to give every corner of the world the opportunity and dignity, and to find the ways and means that enable them to develop, participate and celebrate football,” he said.
His remarks focused heavily on FIFA’s future ambitions and its plans for the worldwide growth of the game. However, they offered no answer to the questions surrounding his own career.
For now, Infantino has kept his intentions private. His refusal to discuss either a possible resignation or a further candidacy means that questions about the next stage of his leadership remain open, despite his appearance at one of FIFA’s major international youth tournaments.
