Frank Onyeka injury boost for Coventry City and Nigeria before AFCON qualifiers

Frank Onyeka is set to return to contention for Coventry City ahead of their difficult Premier League visit to Manchester City, providing a timely boost for both Frank Lampard and Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle. The midfielder has been unavailable since starting Coventry’s opening league fixture against Arsenal.

The Nigeria international missed the club’s past two competitive matches, against Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup and Hull City in the Premier League. Lampard has now delivered a positive update on Onyeka’s condition before Coventry’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.

His potential return will also be welcomed by Chelle, who is preparing the Super Eagles for their forthcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Onyeka has made one Premier League appearance for Coventry this season, beginning the campaign with a start against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. His availability for the match against Manchester City would give Lampard an experienced midfield option as Coventry look to prevent a third successive league defeat.

The 28-year-old played a significant part in Coventry’s promotion campaign after moving to the club on loan from Brentford in January. He featured in 14 Championship matches, scoring one goal and recording one assist, before Coventry completed a permanent transfer for him during the summer.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Tochukwu Nnadi have both picked up injuries, increasing the importance of having established options available for the upcoming international matches. Onyeka’s return provides Chelle with another midfielder who offers experience, physical presence and defensive ability.

His availability does not guarantee that he will start either qualifier, but it removes one concern from the Nigeria coach’s selection process. Onyeka’s ability to compete in the Premier League and his previous contribution to Coventry’s promotion campaign make him a valuable option as the Super Eagles prepare for two important AFCON qualifiers.

Before then, his immediate focus will be on Manchester City, where Coventry will attempt to claim their first league points and score their first goal of the season. The match represents another demanding test, but Onyeka’s return could strengthen Lampard’s plans for the trip.
