Haaland header keeps Manchester City perfect with narrow win over Coventry

Manchester City maintained their winning start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Erling Haaland’s first-half header proving enough to secure all three points.

The result gives City nine points from their opening three matches and leaves them temporarily at the top of the table. Coventry, meanwhile, remain without a point after suffering a third consecutive defeat at the start of the campaign.

Haaland scored the only goal in the 26th minute, rising at the far post to meet an accurate cross from Antoine Semenyo on the right. The Norway striker struck the ball firmly into the net to put Enzo Maresca’s side ahead.

It was Haaland’s finishing that made the difference in a match City largely controlled, although Coventry had opportunities to take the lead before the hosts established their authority.

Taiwo Awoniyi came close to opening the scoring for the visitors in the eighth minute after finding himself in a one-on-one position. His shot went narrowly wide of the left post, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten.

Donnarumma had also survived an earlier scare in the sixth minute when a mistake almost allowed the ball to roll behind him and into the goal.

City dominated possession during the opening 45 minutes, holding 83% of the ball and creating a series of chances. Ryan Cherki struck the post in the 23rd minute, while Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth produced two strong saves to deny Haaland in the 16th and 44th minutes.

Haaland remained a constant threat but was unable to add to his goal after the break. City continued to apply pressure, yet Coventry gradually became more dangerous as the second half progressed.

Donnarumma was called upon in the 67th minute to keep out a shot from Loum Tchaouna. The Italian goalkeeper then made another important intervention 11 minutes from time, using his face to block a close-range effort from Ellis Simms.

Both sides made several substitutions during the second half as they attempted to influence the outcome. City introduced Phil Foden for Cherki in the 65th minute, while Coventry brought on Tchaouna, Simms and Frank Onyeka as they searched for an equaliser.

Despite Coventry’s improved showing after the interval, City’s defence held firm and saw out the remainder of the game without conceding.

The victory extends Manchester City’s perfect record to three wins from three matches, while Coventry must wait for their first points of the season after another narrow defeat.
