Arsenal lead Opta’s Champions League predictions as Paris Saint-Germain face surprise ranking

Arsenal have been installed as the leading contenders to win the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League, according to Opta’s supercomputer, with holders Paris Saint-Germain ranked only fourth in a prediction that also places Real Madrid below Barcelona and Liverpool.

Opta’s forecast was based on 10,000 simulations of the new Champions League season. Arsenal emerged at the top of the list with a 21.2% chance of lifting the trophy, narrowly ahead of Bayern Munich on 19.9%.

Manchester City were ranked third, with a 12% probability of becoming European champions.

Arsenal’s position reflects their performance in the previous Champions League campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side reached the final, where they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout. Despite that defeat, their overall run has led Opta’s model to identify them as the strongest candidate for the next edition.

Holders ranked outside the top three

The biggest surprise in the forecast is the position of Paris Saint-Germain, who are the reigning European champions but have been given only a 7.7% chance of retaining the trophy.

Paris Saint-Germain are aiming to win the Champions League for a third consecutive season, a feat that would give them a historic treble of titles. However, Opta’s calculations do not give them a significant advantage over the leading challengers, despite their success in the previous two editions.

Barcelona occupy fifth place in the predictions, with a 7% chance of winning the competition. They are ranked just ahead of domestic rivals Real Madrid, who are sixth on 5.1%.

Liverpool have been assigned the same probability as Real Madrid, also registering a 5.1% chance of claiming the trophy.

The forecast suggests that Barcelona will face a difficult route from the outset because of their expected meetings with several of Europe’s leading clubs. Their position in the rankings underlines the challenge facing them as they attempt to compete with the strongest teams in the tournament.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, enter the Champions League with the ambition of restoring their position among Europe’s elite. Their sixth-place ranking represents a fall in Opta’s assessment, although the Spanish club remains among the teams considered capable of mounting a serious challenge.

Bayern Munich’s second-place position leaves them as Arsenal’s closest statistical rival, while Manchester City complete the top three. The narrow margin between Arsenal and Bayern Munich means the model sees the contest at the front of the predictions as particularly close.

The rankings do not determine the outcome of the competition, but they provide an early assessment of the leading contenders before the 2026-27 Champions League begins. On Opta’s figures, Arsenal currently have the best chance of succeeding Paris Saint-Germain, while the holders must overcome a clear statistical gap if they are to make history with a third straight title.
