Hansi Flick faces Barcelona midfield dilemma as Gavi and Rodri return

Hansi Flick faces his first major selection challenge in managing Barcelona’s wealth of midfield options, with Gavi back in training and Rodri regaining full fitness alongside Pedri and Marc Bernal.

The four players offer different qualities but have similar ambitions, leaving competition for the two holding-midfield positions wide open. Flick must now decide how to balance experience, control, versatility and early-season form.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Gavi became available again after returning to group training on Thursday. Rodri has also been gradually rebuilding his fitness and featured in Barcelona’s most recent matches.

The timing gives Flick a difficult decision before Sunday’s trip to Mestalla to face Valencia, and ahead of Barcelona’s opening Champions League fixture against Feyenoord next week.

Marc Bernal is the only midfielder to have started all three of Barcelona’s opening matches this season, although he did not finish any of them. Pedri started alongside him in the most recent two games, before Rodri replaced him during the second half.

Gavi began the campaign in the starting line-up against Elche before suffering an injury. He has now returned to full team training and is fit to be involved, although Spanish reports do not expect him to start against Valencia.

Rodri and Pedri emerge as preferred pairing

Despite Bernal’s impressive performances and Gavi’s return, Flick’s preferred plan appears to be a midfield partnership between Rodri and Pedri.

The pair offer Barcelona the ability to retain possession and control the rhythm of matches, qualities that are central to Flick’s approach. The manager praised Rodri’s ability after the midfielder joined Barcelona, highlighting the experience and control he could bring to the team.

Rodri’s importance lies particularly in the balance he can provide in front of the defence. His presence would allow Pedri greater freedom to move forward and help construct attacks, creating a combination Flick believes could give Barcelona more authority during matches.

However, Bernal’s form at the start of the season makes leaving him out a difficult decision. His performances have established him as an important option in the same position, even with Rodri and Pedri competing for the places.

Gavi also offers Flick additional flexibility because he can operate in more than one position. That versatility could help him secure significant playing time across the season, even if he is not selected from the start at Mestalla.

Flick’s immediate decision is therefore not simply a choice between four midfielders. He also has further alternatives in Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo, making Barcelona’s midfield one of the most crowded areas of the squad in terms of available talent.

The manager must now find a solution that keeps his strongest options involved while giving Barcelona the balance he wants before two important tests against Valencia and Feyenoord.
