Trezeguet joins Saudi Pro League club Al-Riyadh on a free transfer

Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” will join Saudi Pro League side Al-Riyadh at the start of the 2026-27 season after completing a free transfer from Egyptian club Al Ahly.

Al-Riyadh confirmed the signing on Tuesday through its official account on X, publishing a video to introduce the Egypt international. The club accompanied the announcement with the message: “From the land of Kinanah… to the Central Region school.”

The move comes after Trezeguet ended his contract with Al Ahly by mutual consent, just one season after returning to the club where he began his career.

The 31-year-old made 32 appearances in all competitions during his only campaign since returning to Al Ahly. He scored 18 goals and provided one assist, although he finished the season without winning a trophy.

Trezeguet also represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, scoring once and claiming one assist.

His move to the Roshn Saudi League adds another chapter to a lengthy career in European and Middle Eastern football. The winger has played in several major leagues, including the Premier League, the Turkish Super Lig and the Belgian Pro League.

Among the clubs he has represented are Aston Villa, Anderlecht, Trabzonspor and Qatari side Al-Rayyan. Trabzonspor currently includes Egypt captain Mohamed Salah in its squad.

Al-Riyadh’s deal for Trezeguet had previously been reported by Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiyah, which said the club had received approval from the Saudi Pro League authorities to complete the transfer after meeting the registration requirements.

The club received its financial efficiency certificate last Thursday after satisfying all of the conditions set by the league. That approval enabled Al-Riyadh to proceed with the signing as it prepares for the new campaign.

Al-Riyadh finished 15th in the Roshn Saudi League last season, occupying the first position above the relegation places. The club avoided dropping into the Yelo League and will now look to improve its position in 2026-27.

Its opening match of the new Roshn Saudi League season will be against Al-Ettifaq on Friday. Trezeguet’s arrival gives the club an experienced attacking option as it attempts to build on last season’s survival and move further away from the relegation battle.
